Re: Flags of 3rd & 9th Georgia battalions

Hi John,

I have been researching Georgia flags for 10 years for an eventual book. I have files for these following flags:

3rd Georgia Battalion

CO. C, Lewis & Phillips Guards - County Museum in Newnan, Georgia. A terrific First National flag with a painted locomotive on the white bar with the name "Beauregard" on the tender. The canto has been cut up for souvenirs sadly and only 2 stars remain. It probably had only 7.

Co. D, Barnesville Blues - I only have information on the flag presentation mostly from the Lamar County history book.

Co. E, Holloway Grays - I have a flag presentation article from the Macon (GA) Journal & Messenger (8/7/1861). The flag is not decribed as to slogans, etc. but it was a First National and probably silk.

Co. G, Baker Volunteers - I have a tidbit about a flag presented from the history of Richmond County book

9th Georgia Battalion

There had been some speculation that the unit carried a Dept. of East Tennessee pattern flag (blue with solid white St. Andrews cross) but in light of other surviving flags from their brigade (Barton's), whihc are all First Nationals, this does not seem to hold up.

That's all I have.
