Re: 60th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry

I have been told an interesting story from of the 60th's descendants. I do not know if it is true but here it is:

my Dad reminded me of an of an old family story about the 60th NC. The story says that after the siege of Petersburg and Appomattox, the men of the 60th were demoralized and realized in their hearts that they were finished. Yet, they were also deeply suspicious of the Federals and well aware of the stories of occasional Union brutality inflicted upon rebel prisoners. So, only a very few men - mostly the officers - actually surrendered at Appomattox and took the Oath of Allegiance to the Union. Most of the surviving 200+ men of the 60th simply decided to call it quits and head back home on foot. Before they scattered, though, a brief camp meeting was called. There, the remaining 59 rifles and muskets were divided up among small groups of men. Lastly, the regimental flag was taken down off its pole and cut up by knife into many small squares, so that each man could have a memento.
