Thanks for getting the ball rolling for me. Cathy Wright of the Museum of the Confederacy e-mailed me and provided some information. The flag was presented to the unit in September 1864 and despite its unusual appearance they believe it to be the units battleflag. They have no information on the reason for the stylistic details but she believes along with the senior curator that it would not be innacurate to portray the flag at Shy's Hill. Coupled with the Bentoville information, I feel comfortable in including it in my illustration.
