The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: 1st and 3rd Florida Battleflag

Ben,

The flag in Alabama started out as a unit flag and was then made into Rucker's Brigade flag at some point. But we know this was not taken at Nashville in December 1864 based on its history.

I know of no definite, proveable flag for Rucker's Brigade used as a special brigade HQ flag other than the one in Alabama's collections. We do know that Forrest's Corps, which included Rucker's Brigade, got all new Mobile Depot battle flags in July, 1864. These replaced the hodge podge of First Nationals and Second Nationals used before this time. We also know that the Yankees were clueless as to what were CS Army brigade flags and battle flags based on existing flags they misindentified in their reports that have been properly ID'd to units.

I am not sure why you are upset when I have presented only facts here. You might not agree with them but they remain facts nonetheless. Please feel free to present other known facts anytime - which is what we do on this board.

Respectfully,

Greg Biggs
