Im also one of the folks that has a great deal of interest in how flags were constructed, yet my main interest is Richmond Depot Flags. For both historical interest as well as making reproductions for historical display and reenacting. Fortunately Ive had the interest for many decades and was able to personally view and examine many originals that are in the MOC as well as many other facilities... long before the era of lock away and hide everything.... and charge you each time you walk in the door... I was one of the guys called upon to authenticate and identify various artifacts so at that time I knew many curators to gain easier access... as well as they knew me and knew I knew how to properly handle such items.. I learned a lot.. but even after years of study and close examinations there are still some aspects and minute details that remain a mystery... So even if you do get to see a couple up close it might not answer all your ponderings.. you can see the finished product but sometimes still scratch your head with "how did they do that"...

The Richmond Depot flags were cut in kits and given out to local ladies to put together.. therefore each flag may have minute differences in construction and sewing methods used,, some kept it simple.. others had rather fine quality details.. and in some examined they took extra liberty to add in a few fancy details once in awhile, particularly with the stars, that I also find of interest. I have the same interest in how many uniform items were constructed also. You may always encounter a few egotistical and snobbish folks that wont share the knowledge.. thats a given with just about anything... keep searching and asking around and you will eventually find those that will...
