... The earlier flag noted should either be a 1st bunting (orange border with wider blue cross) or 2nd bunting, also orange border but with more narrow blue cross, same relative design as the Pickett Flags which were the 3rd bunting, which has the white border instead. This is where the mystery gets tricky. That flag noted is thought to be the 14th Va, yet other references say the 14th didnt get the Seven Pines honor even though they were there. So if it might not actually be the flag of the 14th.. then who elses could it be... Some have debated that it might be the 53rd's flag... since they were able to display that credit.. reportedly the only regiment in Armisteads Brigade allowed to do so.. thus the linked assumption. The 53rd reportedly lost a flag at both Chancellorsville and again at Gettysburg. A natural assumption would be they lost their earlier flag at C'Ville.. then their Pickett flag at G'burg... Much of the data and history of the flags in possesion of the War Dept seemed to have gotten misplaced or lost. So by the time they were returned a fair amount of confusion appears to be left at hand... For every answer found I discover eight more questions...lol.. The quest continues..
