The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: CS AoT Battleflag for Sale

Sounds like it found a good home! Three thoughts: "Believed to be" is a good phrase to keep in mind. One says "BTB," and relates the story he believes. If a wiser person corrects him, he thanks that person (now having a better "story") and moves on. (I have a small "officer's" bugle that was "BTB" the "one that sounded the charge at Gettysburg." (It has an original red braided cord, suggesting arty, so I asked "which charge" and got a stunned reaction...probably the fellow was thinking, "There was more than one?" I haven't tried to tie it to Porter Alexander yet.) It beats downright lying.

Second, "found" or "picked up" flags, some, perhaps, souvenirs of an earlier association. The one wartime Medal of Honor awarded to a member of the US Signal Corps was to a man well inland in VA, but the flag of a CS ship, probably taken from a prisoner or "found" en route to Appomattox. (Years later the medal was rescinded. That evidently wasn't what was intended by "captured.")

Third, the work of the real experts is showing incredible promise of identifying maker, material, origin, and other features. It appeared to me that yours displays neat hand sewing. One of these days someone like Greg Biggs will probably be able to match it and tell you the maker and offer leads of origin.
