In Response To: 5th Florida Cavalry Batt. flag ()

The third national flag of the 5th Florida Cavalry Battalion is a presentation type flag, that would have been given to the unit sometime after the Confederate victory at Natural Bridge, Florida, March 6, 1865. There is not a known record of the presentation of this flag. Coming as it did near the end of the war, the flag may not have been carried in the field, but this is difficult to say for certain.

The flag was retained by the unit commander, Lt. Col. George Washington Scott, who later moved to Decatur, Georgia, a number of years after the war. It was donated to the DeKalb Historical Society by a descendant of Lt. Col. Scott.

The flag has a square battle flag canton and a white field with a vertical red bar on the fly end. Centered on the vertical line where the red bar meets the white field are three separate horizontal strips of white cloth. They are professionally inscribed in gold letters with black shadowing:

5th Fla Battalion.

OLUSTEE.

NATURAL BRIDGE.

This is the only known unit flag associated with the 5th Florida Cavalry Battalion. I have not found any record that mentions them carrying another flag during the war.
