In the book, The Colors Of The Grey by Rebecca Rose (MOC) is a photograph of the "Old First" sadly date unknown but shows a group of veterans with an ANV Battleflag. The man holding the flag seems to be stood holding the flag and only appears to be using one hand. Given his age and weight of the flag perhaps this could be the individual you mention struggling in my opinion to hold the flag.
