To elaborate more what Mr. Ford stated, the honors were done by Lewis Montague, a sign painter in Richmond before the war. He and his brother got contracts from the Richmond Depot to letter tents, knapsacks and battle flags. They are not stenciled however - they are all hand painted letters done one letter at a time by a very skilled artist used to painting in this style.
