Re: 21st New York (Griswold Light) Cavalry Flag

Hi Neil

Well that was FAST; hearing back from you so quickly!!! Yes, what are the chances, after six years eh? I will go through the boxes in the next day or so and see what I can send you. Some of these letters JUST came into my possession. He was a very generous man to Lena. One that I was reading a week ago was written by Volney's aunt, after he died. She wrote to my great grandmother who had stayed in contact with Volney. His aunt wrote about his death and how difficult the last months of his life had been for him. What email address sound I send a scanned copy to? Can you tell me what got you interested in researching Volney. From your article I see that you know that he was haunted by his personal losses. What can you tell me about that. My cousin has a sad and yet descriptive letter that we were discussing last week that I am sure you will want to see as soon as I get it from him. It is written the spring after Lena died. So you live near the place where Volney is buried in California and I live about 20 minutes from where Lena grew up in Ontario, Canada. My understanding is that he died in Oakland, Alameda, California...is that correct? Janice
