27th Tenn captured the 30th Illinois flag

I have been digging a bit on the battle of "Bald Hill". I came across this site, that tells the story of the 27th Tennessee capturing the 30th Illinois flag. Now they claim "flag" but I have info that says both flags were captured.

The 30th Illinois after the battle of "Bald Hill" only had 17 men left in the regiment. The battle was on July 22nd, 1864.

Here is the website, Gregg

I have reports that the following Union regiments also lost flags at "Bald Hill".

The 55th Illinois lost their National Flag, the regiment "ceased to exist".
The 20th Illinois lost a flag (Same brigade as the 30th Illinois) (Force's brigade).
The 111th Illinois lost their Regimental flag.
The 16th Iowa lost both flag.

The 25th Alabama (Deas's Brigade) in their OR report (OR 38, Page 778), reported capturing "Two elegant flags". I don't know yet what those flags were. I do believe the 24th/25th Texas Cavalry captured the 3rd Iowa's flags. The 3rd Iowa had only three companies and somehow they managed to get their flags back and ripped them up. The 57th Ohio and 55th Illinois were overran by Stovall's Georgia brigade.

The 16th Alabama reported in OR 38 page, 732, "Captured Two Yankee Flags". OR 38, Page 747, "Two stand of Colors were captured by the 24th/25th Texas Cavalry, plus 15 artillery pieces.

G.A. Smith's brigade was hit hard and all were Iowa regiments. The 16th Iowa lost flags, not sure yet on the rest of the brigade. The brigade had the 11th-13th-15th-16th Iowa regiments. I believe the 16th Iowa was on the far right (if on the Confederate side). Now I do not see Roger's brigade, 14th/15th Illinois, 41st Illinois, 53rd Illinois, 23rd Indiana, 53rd Indiana and the 32nd Ohio. That brigade was in G.A. Smith's division. Pott's Brigade was also in the division and I only see Hall's and Pott's brigades on the maps. If...Private Sam Watkins wrote about many many flags, it had to have come from Pott's brigade and/or Artillery that was captured plus Hall's Iowa Brigade.

Pott's Brigade, I believe was Roger's brigade. I need to find a more accurate map on a regimental detail of the battle. Albert Castle's books on the Atlanta Campaign is excellent, maps not so good though.

Martin's Brigade had the 55th Illinois, 111th Illinois, 116th Illinois, 127th Illinois, 30th Ohio and the 57th Ohio. The 30th Ohio had about 60 men left after the battle of Ezra Church. It lost 32 men there. So at least 92 men lived after the "Bald Hill" battle.

Have a good day, hope this helps out.
