India rubber cover for 136th NY flag

Newspaper clippings about the 136th New York regiment on the NY State Military Museum website has an article mentioning Martin Graham, who was wounded on 2 July 1863 at Gettysburg: "On the day of the battle he was acting as color sergeant. On going into action he wound the india rubber cover of the flag around his waist, tieing it in front with a large knot. The minnie ball struck the knot, passing through it and into his person where it yet remains." Graham served in company D. Besides the ball which he carried in his stomach, Graham was previously struck on the same day by two separate shell fragments, one on the back of his right hand, and the other on the leg below the knee. He was given a brief furlough to his home in Geneseo until he could recover.
