Re: 23rd Tennessee flag captured

Hi Ed,

A First National flag with 1865 battle honors is the easiest one, but the honors and designation are put on with ink - which was never done on real flags. These were either painted on or sewn on.

The flag is probably one sides - all of the Ebay fakes of this style have been (no stars on the reverse side) plus it was made to look old probably by some sort of bleaching.

The 17th/23rd Tennessee was a combined regiment well before 1865 and no flag with just the designation of the 23rd TN would have been issued in 1865 especially when the unit had been using ANV flags since they lost their Hardee flag taken at Petersburg in June, 1864.

Some poor sap is going to pay a decent amount of money for a fraud basically. I have not seen the description for the flag but it is either listed as an old wartime flag or a reunion flag. It is neither.

Hope this helps.
