And you are correct that flags in smaller museums are not all fakes - most of them are not. I do know of one small museum that does have some fakes in it however.

But these flags like the 23rd Tennessee being offered are exactly like all of the other Ebay fakes in every way from how they are made to their inked and stenciled (some with the stencil marks still showing) battle honors. Real battle honors were either sewn on or painted on - not inked.

One of the flags I saw for the police case was for a Tennessee regiment that had folded in the summer of 1863 and yet this First National flag had battle honors for the Battle of Atlanta which was fought July 22nd, 1864!

Most of the "battle damage" done for these flags is simply buckshot put through them by a shotgun!

If you see as many of these as I have, either in person or in the dozens of pictures that I have in my files, you would see these characteristics being very consistent.

Lastly, these are also too small typically for unit flags.
