Re: Near Union City, Tenn
In Response To: Near Union City, Tenn ()

Hi Shawn,

More below:

>>>>I found it, it was near "Union City", Tenn. There were two CSA Camps, one being for the 21st Tenn and the other camp, some CSA Cavalry regiment. The date would have been on or near, March 31st, 1862.

The 21st Tenn was commanded by Colonel Edward Pickett with 616 men.

The Union forces were under the command of Colonel Buford (who use to command the 27th Illinois Regiment).
The 15th Wisconsin Regiment, under Colonel Heg, 2 companies of the 2nd Illinois Cavalry, plus Captain Hutchen's company of cavalry. Capt. Sarrestrom's battery of Four-6 Pounders. The 22nd Missouri (4 co's) were the reserve.>>>>>

Correct. These two regiments were camped in the area. The 7th Tennesse Cavalry was just forming (it was made from two CS cavalry battalions, the 6th TN Btn. and the addition of some unattached cavalry companies.

The one cavalry guidon we know was taken there was for Hill's Cavalry, formerly Co. C, 6th TN Cav. Btn, then Co, B, 7th Tennessee Cavalry.

The 21st Tennessee Infantry were from West Tennessee and mustered in originally at Union City in 1861. They fought in the Battle of Belmont in November, 1861. They missed Shiloh as they were operating with the CS forces in the Tiptonville/Island No. 10 area at the time and were part of the troops bushwacked at Union City in March, 1862. They later merged with the 2nd Tennessee Infantry (Walker's) to form the 5th Confederate Infantry.

>>>>Also the Gunboat, "Louisville" was working along with the mission.>>>>

The USS Louisville was an Eads class ironclad and no river near Union City could support it. The vessel was on the Mississippi with the rest of the US Navy gunboat flotilla.

>>>>On OR 8, page 124, confirms, that "Col Buford, routed the enemy and captured 4 flags."

Colonel Buford reported "3 Large Flags, 2 Guidon's".

The battle was not "in" Union City, but just a bit away. They had me confused in OR 8, I thought at first it was at/in/near Island Number 10 or New Madrid. This turned out to be out in Western Tenn.

I hope that helps, make sure to check out, OR 8, page 124, for Buford confirmation on capturing the flags. But what flags? Were they all from the 21st Tenn or all from the CSA Cav regiment? >>>>>

Well I would bet some of the company flags from the new 7th Tennessee Cavalry and probably a flag or so from the 21st Tennessee Infantry too. If memory serves only the Hill's Cavalry flag survives today in the Tennessee State Museum.
