I recently wrote an essay for the Tennessee Division Sons of Confederate Veterans state reunion book on the battle flags of the Confederate cavalry of the Western Theater. I was allowed to use Howard Madaus' illustrations for it thanks to his wife Pat.
The main thesis is the variety of CS cavalry flags in the West with the First National being the dominant pattern thanks to how the cavalry in the west was organized when compared to how it was organized in the east. I think you will all find it interesting.
