Hi Dave,

That's good to know, however I know of no CS Navy warship that ever used a Richmond Depot ANV battle flag.

I pulled my file on this flag and can report this based on information secured by the late Howard Madaus:

The flag is an ANV 7th Wool Bunting issue. The men of the various CS Navy units ported at Richmond had been formed into an infantry unit called Tucker's Naval Brigade which formed part of Custis Lee's Division. As such they fell back from Richmond when Petersburg fell and moved west with the ANV. At Jetersburg on April, 6th, the actual ensign of the CSS Nansemond was captured by a soldier of the 5th Corps. That flag has since disappeared. (OR I, Vol. 46, Pt. 1, Page 639)

At Sailor's Creek, also April 6th, a third of Lee's army was cut off and captured. Within this grouping were a number of 7th Bunting flags which formed part of the Richmond garrison, among them the naval brigade. Pvt. B.C. Casey took the flag from its staff and secreted it out giving it to his niece in Portsmouth, VA after the war. Casey was a member of the crew of the CSS Nansemond. The flag survived after the war showing up at veteran's reunions before being sold to the private sector at some point.

Base on my reading of Sailor's Creek and the fact that Tucker's Naval Brigade was indeed there, this all makes perfect sense.
