Re: My CS cavalry flags essay - almost sold out!

Greg,
Received my copy from James Turner, and was greatly impressed with the treatment (as well as the additional info in the program, dealing with the death of Sam Davis). I look forward to the future version. In ways difficult to explain, I think studies such as this -- and I was pleased to see you continuing the approach Howie Madaus pioneered, while lending your own talent and interests -- provide a different appreciation of the way armies responded to leadership and how components of armies interacted, building unit heritage and preserving traditions. There are "order of battle" implications, morale implications -- not just aspects of flag design and manufacture, display and use. In a true sense the "fabric" of an army is reflected in these cloth symbols. I think you sense this as well, for you bring out the Western resistence to having an "ANV" symbol imposed on them, while clinging stubbornly to their own symbols, brought from home, bloodied in their own battles, and representing their strong, inherent sense of independence. Future historians will profit from such refined insights. Good on ya'.
