Re: General Jos. J. Bartlett's Flag

I found another two references to the attack, but not the flag.

Quite pleasant today. Routed out about midnight by an attack of the rebel cavalry on Gen. Bartlett's Hd. Qrs. After a smart brush they were driven off without doing any material damage. Officer of the guard. Went off in the afternoon with a scouting expedition. Didn't see anything worth noticing. had a long jaunt. Wrote to F. H. Hall.

And

So on the fifth of September [1863], about nine o'clock in the evening, a body of some of the enemy's cavalry, commanded by the noted Dick Lewis, attempted to carry their idea and design into execution. [Later in the evening after dealing with repeated bands of Confederate cavalry.] Down dashed the horseman. They neared the tent. Catch the general sleeping? Not much. Seizing his pistols, he dashed outside, and opened a sharp fire upon the intruders. Shot after shot was fired into his tent, striking in and about his bed; but the intended victim was not there.
