Re: Flag Location - Some Gas for the Fire?
In Response To: Flag Location ()

Found a newspaper article (sorry, can seem to find it right now), dealing with who captured what at Rapphannock Station. Here is what the article said, and a couple of citations:

Flag Description - Possible Unit - Source/Reason

Flag 1 - The 8th Louisiana flag, inscribed with the words, "Winchester," "Manassas," &c., was captured by Sergeant Otis Roberts, of the 6th Maine; 8th Louisiana; Per news article and citation for Sgt Roberts for CMOG

Flag 2 - a second by Capt. Shackleford, of company A, 5th Maine; Unknown Confed Unit (Possibly Louisiana).

Flag 3 - a third by Lieut A. S. Lyon, of company K, 5th Maine; Unknown Confed Unit (Possibly Louisiana).

Flag 4 - a fourth by private Philip Smith of the 121st New York; Unknown Confed Unit (Possibly NC).

Flag 5 - a fifth by private Silas Waterman, of the 121st New York; Unknown Confed Unit (Possibly NC).

Flag 6 - a sixth by James H. Littlefield, of company I, 5th Maine, inscribed with the names of "Cedar Run," and "Manassas" "Second Harper's Ferry," "Sharpsburg," "Winchester," Chancellorsville," "Fredericksburg," "Gettysburg;”; Unknown Confed Unit (Possibly Louisiana).

Flag 7 - the seventh by Corporal E. P. Blondil, of company D, 5th Maine, inscribed "Manassas," "Seven Pines, " "Gaines's Farm," "Malvern Hill," "Ethain's Landing."- Unknown Confed Unit (Possibly NC).

Flag 8 -The eighth was a bare pole, the color-bearer having torn up the flag before it was taken. "; 7th Louisiana; From Terry L Jones: Leon Bertin, color bearer of the 7th La. also tore his flag from the staff and hid it under his shirt before surrendering.

From what I have found, the Maine Regiments hit the Louisiana side and the New York Regiment hit the North Carolina Side. What I find interesting is that the newsarticle references 'battle honors' on the 8th's Flag and flag 6 above, but no other LA flag. Asked this earlier on this forum and did a bit of research, and IF I REMEMBER correctly, the NC regiments did have battle honors on their flags but 1st La Brigade Flags did not. Found it also interesting that only Otis was given the CMOH.
