The "subject" is misleading because this isn't a report on all the flags used in "The Territories" but rather just a note about one carried at Honey Springs (17 July 1863). The source is the "Ex-Slave Interviews" conducted by the W.P.A. in the early 1930s, specifically one by Lucinda Davis, who speaks of the soldiers coming: " . . . they was carrying a big red blanket with a criss-cross, like a saw horse, on it."
