Re: 51st VA flag captured at Fort Steadman

I'm sure there are more, that's just what I found in that "Google Book."

Greg, let me ask you, did the 57th North Carolina capture a "flag" from the 57th Massachusetts at the Crater? I have read reports that they did.

I do have the 57th Massachusetts losing (1) flag at the Crater. (Regimental Flag) and Color Guards were captured. The 61st Virginia is listed as capturing the "National Flag." So it is possible the 57th North Carolina captured the "Regimental Flag."

The listings of Union flags captured at the Crater, do not show the 57th NC capturing any flags.

I don't even see the 57th NC on any maps of the Crater battle.

From left to right (Confederate regiments)....(If on the Union side)

34th VA, Davidson's Battery, 46th VA, 23rd SC, Davidson (1 Gun), The rest of Elliot's SC Brigade, 49th NC (to the right of the Crater), 25th NC, 35th NC (Wright's Battery) just behind the 35th NC, Macon's Battery and the 56th NC.

Mahone's Brigade counterattacked with the 6th Va on the far left (Union side again), next the 41st Va, 61st Va in the center, 16th Va and the 12th Va on the extreme right. Behind Mahone, Wright's Georgia brigade pulled up with the 3rd Georgia leading, 22nd GA next, 48th Ga next and the 64th Ga last.

Maybe this map is a bit off. I do not see the 57th NC anywhere.

Well let me know what you think,

Have a good morning, Greg

Shawn
