That "34th Alabama" flag that was captured was probably the one later identified as belonging to the 29th Alabama. The actual 34th Alabama flag was carried through to Bentonville and secreted home by John M. Slaughter, who had been a Sgt. Mjr. in the regement. The 29th Alabama flag is identified as having been captured by 1st Lt. William T. Simmons of Co. C, 11th Missouri on November 16, 1864 near Nashville and given WD capture number 211. That flag was mistakenly sent to Louisiana in 1905. It was then determined that it was the flag captured by Lt. Simmons, however, because the 34th Alabama was nowhere near the 11th Missouri at Nashville, the flag was tentatively identified as belonging to the 29th Alabama. Hope this helps somewhat.
