Hi Bob and Mike,

Bob Bradley was indeed the fellow that found the period newspaper article where Miles declared that none of the submissions were suitable so the flag was designed by the committee itself. Cannon wrote an essay that believes that the committee was inspired by a similar design sent in by a lady (I forget her name offhand). The overwhelming number of flag submissions, having been through the Thian book at Duke University and the color copies of the actual CS flags scrapbook at the National Archives, were based on the Stars and Stripes, so this inspiration could have been from a number of these.

I again state that in neither source do the names of Nicola Marschall or Orren Smith ever appear. Considering how well documented these sources are, it would be pretty much impossible to have submitted a flag design and not have any record of that in them.
