Re: Virginia Flag 23rd - some more things

I believe that the 23rd Virginia Battalion under Derrick received an ANV type flag during there fighting with the ANV, however it was a variant ANV flag. This flag would have been dimensionally the same as the depot flag but without fimbration. I further believe it was locally made or possibly made by Clarence Derrick's northern aunt. The 23rd Battalion joined the Army of Northern Virginia during the spring of '64 and fought with Breckenridge during New Market (05/15/64), North Anna (5/22-5/26), Cold Harbor (6/1-6/3) and 2nd Corps during the Lynchburg Campaign June '64, Monocacy (7/9) and Third Winchester (9/19). The flag the 23rd VA Battalion would have carried was homemade and similar to 8 other Confederate Army of Northern Virginia style flags to exist. Six of which including the flag of the 23rd Battalion is directly related to the south/western part of Virginia. Furthermore it is believed that the flag of the 23rd Va. Battalion was placed in the Old White Church in Elkins W.Va by the family of Col.Clarence Derrick at the end of the war.
