Re: Officials Think SC Civil War Flag Found in Iow

Glenn,

I was not taking issue with your use of the word "Stencil", in the business we call it appliqué, I get it all of the time, so no biggie. I don't see the same handy work on both of the flags. The only simulates of the fronds that I see is the downward leaning on both flags. I don't have my South Carolina file with me but I do recall seeing a few painted flags with a similar tree pattern. The Iowa flag is neater and tighter sewn while the Fort Walker flag is not as organized.

On the letterhead statement I said or meant to convey was a South Carolina newspaper could have made its way to Mobile via ships and a flag was made from an illustration on the letterhead for someone or a ship. Mobile had its own outfitters that could sew just like Charleston did. The Mobile Depot, as you know, made or had made buy a outside contractor many flags, it could have been ordered by a South Carolina unit passing through, and not picked up. Mr. Baker could have purchased it in Mobile along with the National flag, since no one has found a citation on its capture. The only known fact is the 1865 date that Mr. Baker said, on the Iowa flag.

It may never be known what it was used for without more evidence but I do know the Citadel will be making a whole new batch of souvenirs to sell.

Curious as to why it wasn't in your book on South Carolina flags?

Happy Trails!
Tom Martin
