POW Caves

I once climbed a cave with a group of friends that was reputed to have been used to hold Union POWs.

I believe this cave is northwest of Gainesville in Alachua county. There is no way to describe this cave because there were no above ground indications of it, and it was accessed by a dirt road known to the group I went with.

We entered the cave by lowering on a rope. The entrance is just a hole in the ground that you could walk by and not see.

We lowered into a central chamber with passages leading off from it (this was quite some time ago) like a spider's legs.

When we left the cave instead of going back up the rope, I elected to try a passage that appeared to go up. To my surprise at one point I found myself in the cab of what appeared to be a 30s vintage pickup truck. Apparently at some time in the past a portion of the cave collapsed and the hole was filled with trash and dirt - part of that fill appears to have been an old truck.

Does this sound familiar to any here? Can you identify this cave, and if it was in fact used to hold Union POWs?

It would have been an excellent choice. You will walk right past it unless you know it is there, and it could have held quite a few prisoners.

Since the Fightin Crackers took quite a few Union POWs I imagine these were held in such caves - I've never heard of any POW camps in Florida - or of any escapes by Union POWs either.
