Actually, your account sounds much more like the Battle of Marianna. Union troops from Pensacola marched overland and attacked Marianna on September 27, 1864, but were resisted by local home guards, the 1st Florida Reserves and Chisolm's company of Alabama cavalry. Union troops fired a volley at Confederates after they surrendered and the event has sometimes been called a "massacre," although only one man was killed after he had surrendered.
The Union general, Asboth, was severely wounded and the Federals headed back for the coast that same night.
