Re: Union troops in Post-war Jackson County

Dan,

If I remember right, they were part of the 14th New York Cavalry. They weren't entirely popular because in one incident a group of "former" Confederates near Campbellton entrenched themselves around a home and dared the New Yorkers to attack them.

The U.S.C.T. units stationed there after the war came from the 82nd and 86th.

Companies from the 2nd Maine Cavalry were also stationed in Jackson County immediately after the war in 1865.

Quite a few troops were sent into the region following a May 1865 report by Gen. Alexander Asboth that companies of "unrepentant rebels" were active around Campbellton, just northwest of Marianna.
