You're right about that. As much as I love the environment and the native plants and such, I believe the access to that historic place is just as important, maybe even more so because it is beginning to show it's age. I also 'played' there as a child and really all my life. Still do in my mind when I'm there. So much of it has been blocked off to try to preserve it because it has become so fragile that there's no fun running from skunks in the tunnels anymore.
The only part really open is the parade ground and the area around it. Those steps up to the scarp with the Rodman are still there and get steeper every time I climb them (it's an age thing I think). As to the inner part, the only part open was the area where "Geronimo's Cell" was. Of course we all know the truth on that but many tourist don't. ;) Each storm that comes through there's more damage. The outer batteries are still there and accessible.
