Re: Cadets from the West Florida Seminary

Dale, I did a lot of research on West FL Seminary for my article on antebellum southern military schools. An article in the Florida State Historical Quarterly v. 29 estimated that there were 250 students in 1860-61, but only 34 male students in 1864-65.

When the military curriculum was added to the school in 1859, VMIers James H. Lane (future general), George M. Edgar and J. Lucius Cross were brought in to teach. Later, VMIers Valentine M. Johnson became commandant of cadets.
