Thank you for the information. I have been working with old plat maps and a journal kept by one of the 2nd Maine men to try to retrace the route of the original roads on modern topo maps. In places they are the same as modern roads and in others not, but I've been able to trace them out pretty good using satellite images. Hopefully that will help me locate the battlefield sites.

What you are describing is common across the rural areas of the state. Over on my home turf in Jackson County, so much has been lost, but at least now there seems to be a spark of interest in preserving what is left.

Your project to retrace Spurling's movements up into Alabama sounds interesting. I have some additional accounts of the raid if you would like them.
