Re: 15th confederate cavalry research

Shawn,

Records indicate that a couple of the men taken prisoner were on "detached duty," without explanation.

There were two small detachments from the 15th operating in Northwest Florida at the time, both headed by a lieutenant. The first detachment, consisting of men from Company I, 15th Confederate Cavalry and headed by 2nd Lt. F.M. Gordon, was at Eucheeanna Courthouse on the Morning of September 23, 1864, then the camp was overrun by the 2nd Maine Cavalry.

Gordon and a couple of his men were captured, as were a few men from Robet Chisolm's Alabama Militia Company. Union reports indicate they were at Eucheeanna "enforcing the conscription." They were also meeting with a couple of beef contractors, obviously doing double duty to secure provisions and new recruits.

The detachment at Marianna was headed by 1st Lt. Joseph B. Roulhac of Company B, 15th Confederate Cavalry. His records indicate he was on "detached duty" in Marianna. With him were at least four men, H.R. Pittman, Lawson Daniels, Littleton Myrick, and Isaac King.

Since Marianna was the location of a major conscription camp, it is logical that these men were there "enforcing the conscription" as well.

Of this group, Lt. Roulhac and Daniels were captured. King was wounded but managed to escape. Myrick was killed and his body burned beyond recognition in St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

From King's account we know that the men from the 15th fought mounted at Marianna, as opposed to serving as infantry with the home guards. He related that he was knocked from his horse during the cavalry fight at courthouse square, but managed to escape on the horse of Lt. William McPherson of the 5th Florida Cavalry.

Best,
Dale
