Florida Burials, Augusta, Ga

In Magnolia Cemetery, Augusta, Ga., is a Confederate section, consisting of 236 interments, only five of whom are unknowns. It appears that all of the men either died during the war or immediatley following it. While all of the markers but the five mentioned give names, most give only a name and usually the state from which the soldier served. Dates of death are not given except when rarely a VA marker has been substituted for the original marble headstone.

Men whose headstones indicate that they were from Fliorida include:

A. W. Cumby, Row 1, Grave 3
H. J. Haskew, Row 6, Grave 25
A. Mayo, A/4 FLA (VA Marker - no dates), Row 8, Grave 1
F. Schueler, Row 9, Grave 16
A. Birdlong [Birdsong ?], Row 10, Grave 24

In addition, there is a small section with 16 interments, 14 of whom are Fededral who either died in the war or during the Federal occupation 1865-66. However, there are two Confederates buried in this section. One of them is:

CPL Alfred F. Mayo, K/11 FLA, d. 10 Aug 1864 (VA Marker); Row 2, Grave 4

This cemetery is in perpetual care and the Confederate Section is meticulously maintained.
