In Response To: 1st Florida Infantry Co E ()

On Fold3 I find a James A Dawkins (I think this is your James A Dockens, as the Alabama 29th Infantry Co. I has a James Dockens file and transferred it too "James Dawkins")
that enlisted with the "old' Co. E 1st Regiment Florida Infantry on July 21, 1861 at Warrington, FLA by Capt. Baker for a period of 12 mos. There were 5 pages on him. Page 1 showed
the above, page 2 through 5 showed the following....Present Sept.-Oct. 1861,,,,present Nov. - Dec. 1861 ...last page shows present Dec. 31 - (looks like) March 30 1862.

This was all they had with him on the Florida Co. E 1st Reg....there was also a Silas S Dawkins that enlisted the same day at Warrington, Fla...Could be a brother?

The following record was found on a James Dockens that had one page that listed him with the 29th Reg Co. I Alabama infantry. This page forwarded you to records transferrred to
the same person spelled James Dawkins....there are 13 pages on him and on some of the pages it list him as Joseph..(I think it is the same person and they must have thought so also as
they had the records under the same person). The records for this James/Joseph Dockens/Dawkins show he enlisted Oct. 25, 1862 at Camp Lee (It didn't say where Camp Lee was located)
for the war. For some unstated reason it showed him in arrest at Camp Lee in the guard house on the May - June 1863 roll..July - Aug 1863 present at Camp Lee.
He shows to have been captured July 4, 1864 at Chattahoocie, GA and received as a prisoner of war @ Camp Morton Indianapolis, Indiana on July 14, 1864.

Page 8 ...shows captured at Marietta, GA July 4, 1864 ..on roll of prisoners at Camp Morton Indiana and forwarded via Baltimore, MD to Point Lookout, MD for exchange roll dated 2/19/1865
Page 9 they show him as
Joseph Dawkins roll dated Louisville, KY as a prisoner of war captured at Chattahoocie, GA on July 4, 1864..then says Where From: Nashville.
Page 10 it shows him as Joseph on roll of prisoners in Nashville, TN captured by forces under Maj Gen. W. T. Sherman commanding military division of Mississippi and forwarded to
Capt. S.E. Jones Louisville, KY. roll dated headquarters dept. Cumberland offfice provost marshall General Nashville, TN July 12, 1864 captured near Chattahoocie, GA. July 4, 1864
Page 12 shows him as a prisoner of war on roll at Louisville, Ky and under Discharged it has Terms: Camp Morton dated July 13, 1864

Page 13 shows rec'd at Louisville, KY as prisoner of war July 13, 1864 captured near Chattahoocie, GA July 4, 1864 discharged and sent to Camp Morton July 13, 1864 ..the last statement on him was on
page 13 and it stated: transferred for exchange Feb. 19, 1865.

You can go to Fold3 and get a free trial and view the documents ...Just look for him under "Dawkins"

Hope this helps.
