Hi Sharon, just a quick note to say how pleased I am to find your book, 1st Florida Union Cavalry Volunteers in the Civil War. Have read Dale Cox's excellent books about the battles for Natural Bridge and more particularly, Marianna. Interesting to note the 1st FL Union Cav played a significant part in the latter expedition.
My curiosity was peaked years ago when I found a grave marker outside little Milligan, FL near the old Garrett family homestead which read Wm. R. Garrett 1st FL Cav - CSA. Doing some more research about this long lost relative, I was a bit shocked and embarrassed to find the "CSA" may have been in error and that more likely, Wm. R as well as a cousin of his (Overstreet W. Garrett) rode with the eponymous Union cavalry. Down through the years as I have learned more about the anti-seccesh sentiment in the region and the part that slavery played in the pursuit of the war, my own feelings began to change from curiosity to embarrassment to pride that some in the family may have tried to stand up to the rich slavers who were prosecuting the war by switching sides.
Anyway, looking forward to learning more, in particular which expeditions and engagements these Garretts may have participated in. Thanks in advance for the book, looking forward to reading it.
