will grant you that Sherman kept his "bummers" on a very loose leash and often looked the other way. Apparently he could control them only when it suit his purposes.
btw, Sherman did a "practice run" before the Atlanta Campaign and the march to Savannah. In Feb. 1864, he tried out the same tactics used in Georgia during an expedition to Meridian MS from Vicksburg. This was done with the full knowledge and approval of his commanding officer, U.S. Grant.
I agree that he (and Sheridan for that matter) would have been a war criminal if his side had lost (look what happened to Henry Wirz and not to the commandant of Elmira POW camp).
