Gods and Generals

Just finished watching it. What a great movie! Quite long, but it does have an intermission. Don't take kids with short attention spans or you and they will be miserable. Very true to the book and very historically accurate with a few "artistic" exceptions. The battle scene in the town of Fredericksburg makes it look like the Mississipians were routed and they and the civilians fled in disorder. Best I recall most civilians were long gone, and Barksdale, Perry, and some of the 3rd Ga did an orderly withdrawal with no intention of trying to hold the town, just delay the Yankees so that final deployments could be made. The re-enactors were more appropriately uniformed than in Gettysburg, in which they took the "ragged rebel" way too far. Duval does a great Lee - far, far better than Sheen. The Jackson portrayal and particularly Jackson's death scene are powerful, but I can't remember the actor's name. I heard a little muttering in the foyer about it being too sympathetic to the South and Southerners. That made it all the better because it is true, and Yankees had never heard/seen the truth. Go see it!
