Re: Gods and Generals
In Response To: Gods and Generals ()

Art,
Your review of "G&G" was right on-the-money. A copy of the email I sent to the descendants of the men of the 9th Georgia, whose website I mantain:

Hello all....
I saw "Gods and Generals" at the theatre yesterday . It is playing at 5 theatres in the Mobile, Ala. area (probably too many for a 300,000 population). It was also attended by several re-enactors ( 21st or 32nd Ala.[?], in uniform, and ladies in period dress), in the lobby to answer questions. It was fairly attended, and the crowd to see the evening performance as I was leaving was larger than the one I attended.
I came away, after 4 hours and 15 minutes (including a 12 minute intermission) impressed with the authenticity and portrayal of the Southern side in this movie. I am not used to Hollywood producing a movie that is fair to our ancestors, and expected the usual "politically correct" treatment of the Union as the "good" guys, and the South as defending slavery. This was NOT the case, and, in my opinion, was an attempt to portray events as historically correct, with Jackson, Lee and other Southerners reluctant to leave the Union, but determined to defend any invasion of their new country. It certainly has it weaknesses, such as the skipping of major battles, long speeches, drawn out scenes and some other negatives, but makes up for it by trying to get at the reasons both sides fought so hard for their beliefs, and the filming at the actual location of events (some beautiful scenery!).
There are several touching moments in the film, as when the Georgia Irish (Cobb's Legion) repulse the New York Irish (69th N.Y) at the wall at Fredericksburg, and the deathbed scene of Stonewall Jackson. May be a good idea to bring a hankerchief....
Although there are no specific mentions of the 9th Georgia, it is probably representative of how the men lived, thought and fought. Also, if you can overlook the sight of Ted Turner as a CSA Officer singing along on the "Bonnie Blue Flag", it will help. Although bloody, it is not a "Saving Private Ryan" bloodbath (maybe to keep it's PG-13 rating?).
For those of you that saw "Gettysburg", many of the original characters return. Jeff Daniels as Joshua Chamberlain of the 20th Maine, with his brother and Sgt. Kilrain, and other familiar faces......Gen. John Bell Hood, CSA Artillery expert Porter Alexander, Generals Trimble and Hancock. Robert Duvall does, to me, a more credible performance of Gen. Lee than Martin Sheen did. Perhaps that's because Duvall is a distant relative of Lee, and also grew up in Virginia.....
In any event, I am puting a link to the movie trailer on the main page of the 9th Ga. website, and encourage everone with the interest, to see the movie if you can spare a few hours, and a few bucks. I am buying the DVD which is over 6 hours. Don't know how this will do with the general public, and the lack of history, in general, taught in schools, but it's got my vote....

Sincerely,

Neal Griffin

"There were many officers and men who displayed a degree of daring and heroism which challenges admiration in the very highest degree, and the whole regiment behaved with its customary steadiness and devotion, as the loss of 189 out of 340 carried into the field will testify.".........Capt. George Hillyer, the fourth regimental commander (Col. John Mounger-killed, Maj. W.M. Jones-seriously wounded, Capt. J.M.D. King-mortally wounded) in his Official Report on actions at The Wheatfield, (Gettysburg, Pa.) 2 July, 1863.
