2nd Georgia Battalion--Shepperson

Two sources provide information on the Shepperson family.

1. Confederate Reminiscences and Letters 1861-1865, Vol. XI (1999), Georgia Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy, p. 88, describes Clement Carrington Shepperson. He was clerking with Gideon Peacock in Columbus, Georgia when the war broke out, and they both joined the "Columbus City Light Guards," which became Company A of the Second Georgia Battalion. Clement was in 27 pitched battles and was promoted to Corporal for bravery at Gettysburg. Towards the latter part of the war, he was badly crippled and was made a conscript officer. Clement returned to Columbus after the war. His father, Charles Marsh Shepperson, at the time lived on a plantation ten miles from Auburn, Alabama. Previously he had prepared for the ministry at Union Theological Seminary, seven miles from Farmville, Virginia, and near his birthplace.

2. A 24 July 1863 letter from Charles Marsh Shepperson to his brother John can be found in the manuscript collections of the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond. In it, he relates the contents of a letter from Clement concerning the battle of Gettysburg, where Company A lost heavily. Clement's brother, Benjamin, was also a member of the same company and had recently recovered from a wound received at Chancellorsville. Benjamin hastened north to rejoin his command, but upon reaching Williamsport, Maryland learned that the Gettysburg battle was over. He finally reached his company on 9 July near Hagerstown, Maryland.

According to the Soldiers and Sailors Webpage of the Park Service, Clement rose from Private to Second Lieutenant during the war, while Benjamin remained a Private.
