Grandpa Henry Christian of Jones County, Georgia

Does anyone have any information about the Henry Christian family migration from Hayward, North Carolinia, to Jones County, Georgia?

Here is the information that I have. I have a photocopy of the Confederate Widows Pension Claim, Number 3655, dated August 24, 1891, Jones County, Georgia, for Lucinda Christian Mitchell, widowed spouse of Warren Anderson Mitchell, C.S.A. These are my great, great grandparetns.

Warren Anderson Mitchell, C.S.A., was on duty, in the recruiting office, at Camp Number One of Instruction, also called Camp Watts, located near Notasulga, Alabama. Warren Anderson Mitchell, C.S.A., contracted pneumonia and died on November 20, 1862. He was taken back to his old home in Jones County, Georgia, and buried. The Three Witnesses for Lucinda Christian Mitchell's Confederate Widows Pension Claim were: William Jackson; Uriah Mitchell (the uncle of Warren Anderson Mitchell, C.S.A); and B.F. Finney.

This year, the Historical and Heritage Committee of Jones County, Georgia, reprinted "History of Jones County 1807-1907 Memorial Edition, by Carolyn White Williams, with index by Margaret Heard Stephens" and made the book available in June 2003.

Henry Christian was a tax collector from February 16, 1864 through March 8, 1866. He is also mentioned as a person who kept a cool head during the bayonet rule of reconstruction (page 170).

One page 473-474, there is a friend's recollection of Henry Christian, that he came from Hayward, North Carolina, that he grieved over his son, Pvt. William Christian, C.S.A. Private William Christian. Co. F, 45th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, was killed at Guiney Station, Virginia, in May of 1863. Guiney Station, Virginia, is where Stonewall Jackson lived and died after being wounded. Bittersweet history. Henry's son, First Sgt. Hardy Christian, also was in Co. F, 45th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, was surrendered at Appomattox. According to the "History of Jones County, Georgia" the 45th Regiment fought over 31 major skirmishes and battles, and that is the record of the 45th. Hardy Christian, Lucinda's brother, also married into the Mitchell family marrying Mattie Mitchell in Jones County, Georgia.

Henry Christian had a big stick, according to the "History of Jones County" and he was a good family man and provider. Also mentioned on page 474 of the book are: Lucinda Christian Mitchell, my great, great grandmother; and Ida Warren Duffy Mitchell; my great grandmother. The author said that the Duffys of James, Georgia, were fine citizens. This would included my grandmother, Agnes Alberta Duffy Mitchell, one of ten children.

What are the Christians doing?

Most sincerely,
