13th/16th Btn Ga Calvary

Help Please...I am researching the 13th/16th Ga. Calvary Battalion. I have considerable info..but it is very difficult to pin point the various units on a time line to which the 13/16th was attached. I know that they were in Dahlonega, Ga. engaged in quelling the riots that had erupted with pro-Union sympathizers.

I know that originally they were enlisted in Jackson County under Colonel Hunt and voted to join Colonel Morgan's Calvary near Knoxville, Tenn. It is known that they were on the 1st Kentucky Raid by Morgan because they are mentioned as Georgia Partisan Rangers under Colonel Hunt as being part of Morgan's Calvary. They are also mentioned several times in the book "The History of Morgan's Cavalry"
by Basil W. Duke which was written shortly after the war and reprinted by Indiana U.S. Press in 1960.

I know that they participated in the Battle of Knoxville and I also have info that indicates that the 13/16th was on the 2nd raid into Kentucky by Morgan. I am presently researching the book "The Longest Raid of the Civil War" by Lester Hortwitz which appears to be a well researched and documented book.

I believe that the 13th/16th (at least some companies) were also attached to General Vaughn's Calvary during the latter part of the war.

My suspicion is that this unit continued to serve with Gano of Morgan's Calvary at various times during the war, operating in and around Abingdon, Va. and Knoxville, Tenn. but I have been unable to verify this premise.

It is highly possible that this unit may have served with Joe Wheeler's Calvary accompanying him at various times during action in Tennessee,Virginia, and perhaps Georgia. My mother, who is still alert, at 93 remembers her Grandfather saying that "he participated in the Battle of Atlanta and that he also served in Virginia where it was so cold that he could throw a dipper of water from his saddle and it would freeze before it hit the ground."

I have data from several Civil War letters and remembrances of various members of the 13th/16th Ga. Calvary...but in some instances the information seems to be "war stories" inconsistent with information that I can document from various Battle Reports.

I have the CSR of my GG grandfather as well as his pension
application but the CSR only has one page (his enlistment and being present at the roll call). His pension application only indicates that he served in the 13th/16th and that he surrendered at the last of March or 1st of April in 1865 at Abingdon, Va. which is just north of Knoxville, Tenn.

Also have CSR's of the two witness who verified my GG pension application...all of these records are almost void of info...only one receipt for pay drawn in Va. in 1864. No location given.

I have quite a file on the 13th/16th Ga. Calvary...but I hope in the future that I can compile an accurate history in so far as possible to become part of my research of the Vandiver family.

Any help will be greatly appreciated...any web sites will be helpful...even if information that I have is duplicated..no harm done...perhaps some tid-bit of fact will open a door widely. I'm sure my GG was not part of the few men of the 13th/16th which refused to surrender and went into N.C. to join with the escort of President
Davis...but some of the men which were part of Davis' escort were from Jackson County, Ga. so I feel that these men were acquaintances of my GG.

Lots of questions...but I know that there are many knowledgeable individuals who visit this site..and it is hoped that they will be willing to share their knowledge.

I realize that the nature of Cavalry operations required them to move from one command to another and that in many instances the wagons carrying personel records were burned along with supplies to prevent them from falling into enemy hands.

Thanks for any help or information shared.
