Re: Upson County Civil War History

I am researching the Tally/Talley family of Upson/Meriwether.

W.D.K. Talley, Co. K, 5th Inf. Co. D, 13th Inf. UPSON COUNTY, Private

son of Pate Tally b. abt 1790 Virginia d. abt 1858-1860 in Upson County

William David Kurtis Tally was b. abt 1838 in Upson County

m. married abt 1866 to Francis Elizabeth Fuller, children: Thomas, Samuel, Sarah J, William, Elizabeth, James H., Benjamin F. Dolly (all born in Upson County)

William died in 1830 Cullman County, buried Ryans Creek

Tally Hole is a valley in southwestern Upson County that was owned by the Tallys for many years. It is on the Flint River that is the border between Upson and Meriwether counties. I believe this is why you are finding records in both counties. Tally land is on both sides of the river. They owned over 200 acres there until a few years ago. When Bill Tally died about 10 years ago the land was sold to a Mr. Fletcher who owns one of our funeral homes here in Thomaston. The land is still known by many as Tally hole and a lot of people float down the river and fish there. Mr. Fletcher has it fenced off, everyone I have talked to said the Tallys made liquor there for many years starting back to the early 1900s.

Thank you, Lorraine
Tally/Talley, Fuller, Hammock, Eller, Pitts
