Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery
In Response To: Re: Gate City Hospital ()

Confirming Kurt's response to Nell:

I visited Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery on my return trip from family vacation this past summer. Did so "on the fly" late one Saturday afternoon and found everyone I was looking for in the space of 1 hour thanks to my copy of Dr. Robert E. Zaworski's "Headstones of Heroes: The Restoration and History of Confederate Graves in Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery" (Turner Publishing Company, 1998). Turner Publishing is located in Paducah, Kentucky and has a toll free number for ordering: (800) 788-3350.

After the war, the Atlanta Ladies Memorial Association was formed to finance and implement the reburial of all Confederate dead that could be found within a ten mile radius of downtown. There are 3,900 marked graves for those who died in Atlanta hospitals.

An additional 3,000 unknown dead were recovered from the trenches surrounding Atlanta and reburied in a special section. I have concluded that the remains of those Confederates killed at Peachtree Creek on July 20, 1864, if found, were removed to Oakland after the war. This area is now completely covered with modern housing.
