It is commendable that the 10th Battalion stayed as long as it did in the trenches at 2nd Deep Bottom. Its five companies were deployed in the trenches as skirmishers, three feet apart and probably fielded less than 300 men if even that many were available. The battalion rarely had its full complement and had suffered heavy casualties in several previous engagements. In its last engagement it lost 40% in casualties out of about 200 men engaged. The adjutant reported 64 casualties in killed, wounded and captured at Deep Bottom, but there were considerably more than he reported.
