J.D. Wofford, Co. D, 52nd Ga. Inf.

Wofford enlisted in Cleveland, Ga. in March of l862. He was
captured at Cassville, Ga. May 20, 1864. He arrived in
Cleveland, Ohio at Camp Cleveland on or about June 16, l864
with a group of about 300 former Confederate prisoners from
Camp Douglas in Chicago. They had renounced allegiance
to the Confederacy and had enlisted in the U.S. Navy. The
group, under guard, was en route to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Wofford was admitted to the U.S. General Hospital at Cleveland and treated for erysipelas on June 15,
1864 and was released on August 4. I have not been able
to locate his records in the National Archives for his time in the U.S. Navy. I am searching for his place of burial. Someone has suggested that Wofford could never go home again and that he may not be buried in Ga. Has anyone out there every run across his place of burial? I am assuming that he survived the war and returned to civilian life somewhere.
