Re: cavalry escorts
In Response To: cavalry escorts ()

With few exceptions, this was usually a fairly easy occupation. Escorts assigned to the Army of Tennessee weren't involved with the usual activities of cavalry. The War Department disapproved of the practice and evetually escort companies were ordered back to their regiments. Several independent companies were assigned to the 12th Alabama Cavalry Battalion, increasing it to a regiment.

I've never been able to determine which Georgia escort company was assigned to that command.

Cavalry leaders such as Forrest and Roddey tended to make effective use of their escort companies. These companies remained on duty until the end of the war.

The Army of Northern Virginia never employed escort companies. For instance, Robert E. Lee never had a military escort.
