I am looking for information on a "John Daniel Nelson". He supposedly, served as a Surgeon in the 4th Georgia Infantry, during the War of Northern Aggression. He is my GGG Grandfather, and he was actually a Blacksmith/Gunsmith by trade. So I'm not too sure how he would have been a Surgeon. My Grandfather remembers his Grandfather (who is John Daniel Nelson's son) talking about J D Nelson being a "Captain" in the CSA. I know that normally Regimental Surgeons held the rank of Major. If anyone may have some information regarding his enlistment and what unit he served and to what capacity he served as (wether as an officer or as an enlised). I would be inedebted to you for that information. Thank you.
