Re: 9th Georgia Infantry / Athens
In Response To: 9th Georgia Infantry / Athens ()

My great, great grandfather was Henry Beusse's brother, Johann Hinrich Diedrich Beusse, the eldest of four sons. Their father was Diedrich Henry Beusse, sea captain from Altoona [Altona], Germany near Hamburg. This is where both Capt. Henry and J. H. D. Beusse were apparently born. My g. g. grandfather, also a sailor and mate, preceeded Henry in coming to America by some unknown amount of time, to join their sister, Wilhelmina Beusse, already living in Charleston, SC. I believe Capt. Henry came in through New Orleans, and subsequently traveled to Charleston, on or about Christmas, 1845.

I presume you have a copy of "The Beusse and Evans Families" written in 1923 by J. H. Beusse. If not, this publication has an exceprt on pg. 5 from The Athens Banner, dt. Sunday, July 26th, 1903. It states that during the Civil War, Henry was was a member of the Ninth Georgia Regiment until detailed by the Gov't as a conductor for the Atlanta and West Point Railroad Company. He was in service In NC & SC by the Confederate Comissaries until the close of the war. He carried the last prisoners that were exchanged from Florence, SC to Wilmington, NC. He also carried the last provisions to Camden, SC, which were then sent to Gen. Joeseph E. Johnston's Army of TN. After the war, Capt. Beusse walked from Florence, SC to Athens, having several narrow escapes along the way, because all bridges had been burned.

Again, I would presume you have a copy of the publication I mentioned. If not, I would surely think copies are circulating in Henry's decendents' families around Athens. It documents Henry's side of the family very well because J. H. Beusse (the author) was Henry' son. I only wish there were more reference to J. H. D. Beusse in it, as this is the only biographical data regarding him in existence as far as I know.

FYI, my family, the sons and grandsons of W. H. Beusse, Sr. and W. H. Beusse, Jr. (who were son and grandson of J. H. D. Beusse respectively) reside in and around Thomasville, NC. I believe W. H. Jr moved here from GA in the early 1900s.

Now, a couple of questions for you, if you don't mind:

1. How are you related to the subject?
2. If you have any information on Beusse family members directly decended from Henry's brother, J. H. D. Beusse that still reside in GA (and my Dad knows of a few), would you please forward this to me at LBeusse@VecoplanLLC.com?

Regards,
Len Beusse
